The size and weight of this 1¼” roughing gouge make it ideal for medium to large spindle work up to about 3” (76mm) spindles.

The HSS blade will hold a fine edge, this is a well-balanced tool with a 14” beech handle.

The cutting profile of these tools are ground straight across making sharpening them easy to perform with a bevel of about 45°.

The Roughing Gouge is the first tool to use when spindle turning.

It is used to conveniently take of the corners of the stock leaving it round ready for further work. (Not for bowl turning)
